Cultural
Pilot Hill has social significance which is manifested in the knowledge the present Aboriginal people have about the area and the way in which it was used. This area is still talked about and visited by Aboriginal people, who see this site as a direct link to this history in the region, to their cultural settlement areas along the Clarence river, and to their place in the cultural landscape of the lower Clarence Area. Years ago when Yaegl people used to come to Whiting Beach on Hickey Island for Christmas holidays, They would fish along Whiting beach where the water went deep close to the shore where they would catch trevally and bream but mainly whiting . This is how Whiting Beach was named.
Beaches
Just south of Yamba is Angourie Point, a National Surfing Reserve ranked among the top right-hand point breaks in Australia. For a dip closer to home, have a swim at Whiting beach at Hickey Island or nearby Turners Beach and Yamba Main Beach (and its scenic ocean pool or Pippi Beach.
Fishing
Anglers can catch plenty of fish either from the beach, along the estuary or off the rocks. You can hire boats or fishing kayaks, and drop into one of the numerous bait and tackle shops for tips on where the fish are biting. Both Reel Time Fishing Charters and Yamba Fishing and Charters offer expeditions out into the Pacific.
Sustainability
Yaegl Eco-tourism Lighthouse Cottage is working towards meeting the Global Sustainable Tourism and the Australian Eco-tourism Certification.
